Barrier Islands represent some of the most dynamic and complex systems within the Critical Zone worldwide. The maximum elevations of isolated dunes in both developed areas and undeveloped areas are generally higher than they were in 1886, but they do not extend as far inland. Because they are not attached to the mainland, barrier islands migrate relatively rapidly in response to changing sea level and sediment supply, and in response to large storm events. In an investigation of barrier islands shorelines in mixed-energy settings throughout the world, Hayes (1979) noted that many barriers exhibit a chicken leg drumstick barrier island shape. This chapter takes a Critical Zone approach to the response of Barrier Island evolution to sea-level rise and storm activity, explicitly recognizing the feedback among sediment supply, aeolian transport, disturbance regimes, vegetation development, and hydrology. The disadvantages of traditional development include higher upfront costs and potentially higher maintenance costs, a more hands-on approach to security and maintenance, longer implementation and testing periods, and updates and changes that require more time. The three primary mechanisms are: (1) dpit detachment or segmentation by inlet formation (Fisher, 1968); (2) nearshore aggradation of shoals (Otvos, 1981); and (3) detachment of a dune ridge complex through submergence and flooding of low-lying areas landward of the dune ridge (Hoyt, 1967). The lagoonal deposits can form hydrocarbon source rocks if they are organic-rich, as is often the case in lagoons. The Solomon Islands is a Melanesian country in the Pacific Ocean, with a population of 552 267 (World Bank, 2011), settled in more than 5000 villages spread across 350 inhabited islands. Early hypotheses of barrier island formation through the emergence of nearshore bars have been discarded but it has now been demonstrated that where a large shoal area is present offshore it is possible for emergent intertidal features resembling swash bars to form and grow to the limit of wave action forming a nucleus on which flotsam can accumulate. The island did not narrow below these values because overwash was effective at transporting sediment over the barrier island, thereby keeping pace with the rate of ocean shoreline recession. If the rate of sea-level rise is faster than landward transfer of sediment can occur, the barrier will become completely overwashed and the subaerial and inner shoreface sediments will be deposited over the marsh and lagoon sediments, preserving them (Figure 37(b)).
