This option also has the added benefit of visiting both pubs in the village in the last stretch of the walk as you head back to the start through Upper Tewin. - from the Three Rivers District Council website, Cole Green Way - "The Cole Green Way runs from Hertford to Welwyn Garden City along the path of a former railway and caters for cyclists, horseriders and walkers.The path starts by Hertford Football Club and there are entrance and exit points at a number of points along the way. A buggy-friendly kissing gate brings you out south of Ferry Nab and then follow the path to Cockshott Point and back to Bowness Bay. After about 1km, youll reach Watton at Stone Common on your right which is perfect for a picnic. There is also a pub in the village if you want some post-walk refreshments. Many routes can be slippery and muddy after wet weather. RSPB Fairburn Ings is a nice day out for kids and a pram-friendly walk. Apart from lovely walks and good trees for climbing, theres play equipment, Go Ape and a good caf. There are some mild hills on this option, but nothing too strenuous, and there is also a section of walking along a very quiet country lane, so be careful there. The walk doesn't visit the village of Green End, but instead descends through Graves Wood to take you on a walk along The Old Bourne track and a long the valley. For families with older children, the reserve has a range of habitats woodland, heath and meadow to explore. Some half a million trees have been planted on what was formerly arable land. In the summer there is a fantastic splash park and usually an ice cream truck hanging around.
