I foresee lots of Pirate Kake and Star of the East Flake in my pipe smoking future. I bought the English sampler of C&D, a came across this blend. Pirate kake is popular for a reason! Still I find it a smoother ride than say Star of the East or Pease's Gaslight.. Ill taste Latakia for awhile after smoking this, but thats not to say its an unpleasant smoke. Still one star off for not having any other notes that I can discern. It is very monotone and I don't notice the "other" oriental varieties at all. For a cigar smoker I think latakia is the way to go - Its a stronger flavor and extremely relaxing, that virginia stuff does not compare! When rotated with other blends (I smoked Virginias around this) it was really good, but trying to go bowl after bowl until the tin was empty was just too much for me. Absolutely luscious! The latakia is right in your face, yet it's smoothed out with the burley and orientals. This stuff is the true test to someone if they really love latakia or not. Pirate Kake, on the other hand, it pure Cyprian smokiness without the coolness. Burns well, I like to dry it a bit but its okay not, just a little more moisture in the bowl than Id generally like. Will buy more and experiment to see what aging does. The Turkish/orientals are dry and very floral. I don't have any problem smoking this. A harsh characteristic smell of the latakia hits your face as you open the tin. If you prefer a five coarse meal over a simple dish, then the many flavors provided by PK will titillate your taste buds. In addition, although the jarred cubes I had saved became a little dry, moistening them with about a shot's worth of golden rum per half pound will yield a blend that has neither equal nor counterpart. The latakia that Craig uses does have it's own unique taste and room note for whatever reason. This stuff produces huge, thick clouds of smoke which never dissipate. There's also a sweet smell to it that mixes with the smokiness very well. Minimal relights. I can't detect other content in it, than latakia and some latakia blended with a pinch of latakia. Full, dense, aromatic taste leaves nobody indifferent! On a side note I smoked my first bowl in the cabin an hour before my wife got home and I'm sleeping in the doghouse tonight. Pirate Kake starts very spicy with pine smoke and leather flavors and supports only a minimum of sweetness. I like Latakia. Burley provides body, added smoothness and aids in the creamy mouth-feel.
